Although it is the sugary white beaches that attract more people to Fort Walton Beach, it has an impressive history and has reminders and dedications to its history with Civil War encampments, eighteenth-century pirates, and Native American inhabitants. Fort Walton Beach encompasses an area also known as Okaloosa Island. Fort Walton Beach is known for having frequent community events in its historic downtown area and parks and popular events include Native American Flute Festival, Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, Downtown FWB Art Walk, and Dog Daze. Many events pay tribute to the Native Americans that originally inhabited the area.
