Indian Temple Mound Museum : 12,000 Years Of History

The Indian Temple Mound Museum was established in 1962 and it is one of the oldest museums in the State of Florida. Since I vacationed near it before moving to the Emerald Coast of Florida, I go there at least once in a year. I go there on my own and I sometimes accompany my colleagues to the museum.

This is not just a museum. Its major significance is that it gives deep insight into Native American history on the Emerald Coast of Florida. It was a center for the Mound Builder Culture between  800AD and 1,400AD.  There are about 1,000 artifacts here and some of the artifacts are over 12,000 years old.  The museum has a lot of exhibits that gives information about the rich history of Native Americans and their lifestyle.  You will also see some artifacts on early settlers, local pirates, and European explorers.

The Indian Temple Mound Museum is more than just artifacts.  It has historic weaponry and other items.  There are also some bones that are over 14,000 years old. There are other museums within this facility as well.  Some of the museums in the complex are Schoolhouse Museum and Garnier Post Office Museum.

Bring your kids!  Children can enjoy interactive exhibits that are easy for kids to understand and learn from.   It is very important for them to understand that Florida’s Gulf Coast is one of the most fun places to vacation and live but it has so much more to it than what is here now and what they can currently see. The Emerald Coast of Florida has a lot of stories to tell.
